The Future watches the scientists and the cherry blossom
On 31 March 2014, the best scientists in the world met in Yokohama, Japan.
These men and women have spent their lives measuring changes in the atmosphere’s chemistry; rates of animal and plant extinction; the melt of glaciers and ice caps… They are the experts and they are launching a report.
The report is called: ‘The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Working Group Two Report’. It will describe the various ways that our future is massively under threat because we are failing to stop climate change or adapt to its worst effects.
Instead we are pumping more CO2 into the already bloated atmosphere. This is for so many reasons – but an important one – is that the politicians – those people we vote into power so that they can act responsibly on our behalf – are encouraging industries and attitudes that emit more carbon, rather than figuring out how to stop emitting CO2 – and in fact how to remove it from the atmosphere.
So our politicians are screwing us over and this is because:
1. They are unimaginative idiots who aren’t all that bothered that they are presiding over the end of the world as we know it.
2. They are in the pockets of big companies (because big companies have power and money and politicians like power and money) – and so they do what they are told by the oil and gas lobby.
The Future in Japan is rising. Young people went to watch as the scientists released their report that told the world (and – importantly – the politicians) how utterly screwed our future is – and how imperative it is that we listen to the science and create policy that could still save our future. The scientists are crystal clear on this – if politicians lead now then we still have a chance to save the future. If they don’t then they will be responsible for the end of the world.
These kids from the Future stood for two hours in silence as the report was released. The drew The Eye on their faces – a sign that they are watching the politicians and expecting them to react to the science; to protect our future.
