If you want to save the future from climate change then vote.
The world is facing a climate meltdown that threatens the whole of human civilisation. This is not apocalyptic ranting. It is scientific fact.
The only people that have a hope in hell of saving us from this future are our politicians.
We have been taught to feel guilty about climate change. That it is our fault for buying the wrong things. Or going on the wrong holidays. This is bollocks. All of those things might help reduce emissions in a minimal way – but we are all stuck in a global economic system that is addicted to fossil fuels. Our individual actions are never going to be enough to kick this global habit. And this addiction – if we don’t kick it – is going to wipe us out.
We need to change the system fast. And the only people who have the power to change the system fast enough are the politicians. They can tax the hell out of fossil fuels. Invest in the amazing technologies that harness to endless abundance of the energy from the sun and the wind. Spend taxpayers money on insulating hundreds of thousands of homes so we use loads less energy.
We need to vote so that they know that we want them to do this.
Because at the moment most politicians are behaving as if climate change was just another political issue. They are telling us that they are going to do something about it – but the action they are promising us is trivial compared to the scale of the threat we’re facing. Climate change is not just another political issue. It is the mother of all political issues. If we don’t make dealing with it a massive civilizational priority our democracies and our economies will be wiped out along with our cities and our water supplies.
To deal with climate change – to really protect our future – we need the politicians to oversee a massive redeployment of our financial and technological resources. We need spend billions to kick-start an amazing new future where new technologies make power cheap and abundant. Where we are freed from dirty geopolitics because we no longer need to go to war in the Middle East to protect our oil supplies: we are getting our power from the sun that shines and the wind that blows where we live.
That future is so fucking close. Solar and wind power and the other renewable energies are the fastest growing forms of power generation worldwide. Electric cars are getting cheaper and smarter every day. Solar planes are being trialled.
But this future – the right future – the future we want and need – is not coming fast enough. We need to completely wean ourselves off fossil fuels by the middle of this century if we are to avoid getting stuck in the wrong future – the one where the climate has gone so haywire that everything changes and not in a good way. That is why The Future’s Eye symbol is a zero drawn around our right eyes. Because that’s what we need – to get to a future of zero emissions from fossil fuels really fast.
Several political parties are saying that they are promising to protect our future by cutting the budget deficit. Giving us more austerity. This is a joke. Austerity is unnecessary. It’s a strategy for shrinking government that has been opportunistically deployed by the right wing in response to the 2009 financial crash. And – despite the fact that most economists argue that it is unnecessary and destructive – for some strange reason the mainstream media and even the Labour Party has bought into this. The main parties are competing to show us how fucking austere they can be. But austerity is a load of shit – it is not helping our economy and it is destroying our public services. And it is completely incompatible with protecting our future from the crazily vast threat of climate change.
We need to be spending money now. Spending money to get us moving fast towards the right future. At the moment borrowing money is cheap. It is the perfect moment for borrowing a lot of money and spending it so that we can do our part in making sure that humanity survives. This is not a trivial extravagant thing to be borrowing money for or spending money on. It is the best possible investment. A once in a species investment. Not doing it would be insanely irresponsible.
The politicians can do this for us. They can take us to the right future. They have extraordinary economic and legislative power to drive change. But at the moment they don’t think you care. They don’t think you are on their case. Young people vote less than any other group. Of course politicians don’t think very hard about protecting our future.
So please fucking vote. Vote for a party that you think is taking this shit seriously. If you want to find out which party you should choose then check out the Vote for Policies website.
The party you choose might not win in your constituency. But your vote will not be wasted. It will tell the people in power that you care about your future. UKIP has managed to drag the centre ground of the political system to the right. Support for the greener outliers (which, in case you haven’t already guessed – include the Green Party, the SNP and Plyd Cwmru) can shift our political system towards a future where we get serious about building a world that will no longer be addicted to stuff that is going to destroy everything.
If you vote you will let the system know that you want the powerful to act for you, not for their mates in the oil industry. That you want humanity to survive.
We are sorry if this sounds embarrassingly apocalyptic. That’s because the fucking apocalypse is coming. But it’s not too late to stop it.
